A picture is worth a thousand words . . .

This past week, Will turned five. I could describe in detail the events of the day, but I thought instead that I would just post a few pictures that capture the main events. Unfortunately, most of our family had the flu, so opening presents was pretty much the day's only celebratory event. We made up for it though by getting Dad and Will tickets for the Monster Truck show. (If you had told me ten years ago that one day I would buy tickets for a monster truck show, I would have laughed out loud and mocked you the rest of the day. Oh well, I guess it's true--we never know where our future will lead.)

"Why is my mom always giving me lame books for gifts?"

"I love Thomas the Train, but a Thomas game that helps me learn?"

"Just what I wanted! An 'all-by-itself' Percy train!"

As you can see, Will was at least excited about one gift. (However, by the end of the day he had decided that Joseph Had a Little Overcoat was a pretty good book and that the Thomas ABC game was fun.) My favorite part of the day was watching Will and Josie run from one toy to the next, playing together all day long. It made the miserable night before, of wrapping presents with feverish chills, headache and overall weakness, worth it.

Finally.
I decided to create a blog. I see most people's blogs as a waste of time--theirs and mine. Occasionally I come across one that makes me laugh out loud or reflect on my life. I don't pretend to be one of these talented writers, and this has kept me from joining the blogging world. However, after talking with one sister, she convinced me to use a blog to post the funny things my kids, Will (4, almost 5) and Josie (2 going on 12) do. I suppose if my family and I are the only ones who read it, it's purpose will be served.

The following is one of my favorite stories about Will and Josie:

This past Halloween Will decided to dress as Superman. We went to the store and bought the costume. (Perhaps one day I will be the good sort of mother who makes their child's Halloween costumes . . . maybe. Honestly, probably not.) When we got home Will ran in the house, stripped down to his underwear and put on the Superman outfit. Then he climbed up on our 18 inch fireplace hearth, extended his arms and jumped. As soon as he landed, he burst into tears and ran into another room. The paranoid mother in me assumed the worst--that he had broken a limb--and ran to him and began making mental preparations for an ER visit. I picked him up and started comforting him, while asking what was wrong. What hurts? Did he hurt his leg when he jumped? Did he land on something when he came down? No, no, he answered. Realizing there was no bodily injury, I tried to find out what was wrong. I told him he looked great in his new costume, did he like it? "NO!" he said. "It's broken! We have to take it back!" I looked it over quickly, saw there was no tear and told Will I thought it looked fine. "No!" he said again. "It's broken! I need to get a new one! It doesn't make me fly!"
It took at least two weeks before Will would put the costume on again.

Poor Josie, who loves to copy her brother, was almost as disappointed to find out that the "costume people" do not make pink Superman costumes. Whenever someone asked about her costume for Halloween she replied that she was going as a dog because their are no pink Supermans.
Oh well. I guess there is always next year for a child's Halloween fantasies to come true.
